Prescription Drug Tiers

Prescription drugs generally fall into the following “tiers,” and your out-of-pocket cost will vary by each of these tiers. Whenever possible, consider filling your prescription with a generic drug rather than a brand-name drug.

Generic Drugs

Medication that contains the same active ingredients and is available in the same strengths and dosages as its brand-name equivalent. Generic drugs cost less than brand-name drugs and save you money.

Preferred Brand Drugs

Medication that has been identified as a good value, both clinically and financially. You pay less for preferred brand-name drugs than for non-preferred brand-name drugs.

Non-Preferred Drugs

Medication that has an alternative generic or preferred brand-name drug that is clinically equivalent. Non-preferred brand- name drugs typically cost more than generic and preferred brand-name drugs.

Specialty Drugs

High-cost medications used to treat complex, chronic conditions like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, and may be Preferred or Non-Preferred Specialty drugs. They often require special handling (such as refrigeration during shipping) and administration (such as injection or infusion). Specialty medications are limited to a 30-day supply at a time. All specialty medications must be filled through Accredo Specialty Pharmacy.

Effective February 1, 2024, medications classed as Anti-Obesity will be excluded (not covered) under the NetResults Drug List for the BHealthy Care pharmacy plan. This includes, but is not limited to, Wegovy, Saxenda, and phentermine. Call Pharmacy Member Services at 800-370-5088 with any questions regarding the NetResults Drug List.

Filling Your Prescriptions

Retail (up to 30-day) presciptions

Many prescriptions can be filled at any in-network retail pharmacy. Find an in-network pharmacy here.

RWJBarnabas Health Onsite Pharmacy

Prescriptions can also be filled at an RWJBarnabas Health on-site retail pharmacy. Onsite pharmacies are either managed by RWJBH or Walgreens and located at many of our facilities.

Click here for a list of our onsite retail pharmacies.

Maintenance Medications

Maintenance medications (i.e. long-term drugs such as those to treat high blood pressure or high cholesterol)  must be filled through Amazon Pharmacy, or an onsite pharmacy at an RWJBarnabas Health facility. After the second fill, if you do not begin utilizing Amazon Pharmacy or one of our onsite pharmacies, you will be charged 100% of the cost of the drug at a retail pharmacy.

Specialty Drugs

Specialty medications are expensive drugs used to treat certain serious medical conditions. All specialty medications must be filled through Accredo Specialty Pharmacy.
